The female man is a feminist science fiction novel by american writer joanna russ it was originally written in 1970 and first published in 1975 russ was an avid feminist and challenged sexist views during the 1970s with her novels short stories and nonfiction works. The narrative of the female man is hard to follow as it switches between narrators and between first and third persons the books message this is an important book for feminist science fiction but its not an entirely successful one. The female man presents four five really but the fifth is a sort of unofficial narrator archetypal women living at different points on an imaginary timeline having these women living in the same world but at different times shows how societys expectations and role assignments color a females options and choices. The female man may not have all the answers but it definitely has a few ideas this is a book with a lot to say about rape culture about power politics and about the way patriarchal societies limit womens human rights and their opportunities to grow. The female man is a product of its time 1975 major themes are the feminism the multiverse environmentalismfour different women or perhaps aspects of the same woman are brought together by a multiversal event they are jeanine janet joanna and jael their origin worlds are very different
